Leighton Library, Dunblane

Scotland's oldest purpose-built independent library founded in 1687

Leighton's life and times - for upper primary school stages

Find out about Robert Leighton's Life and Times

The Leighton Library provides an excellent teaching resource for children, with links to different areas of the curriculum. This pack provides for links to history and to the religious and moral education (RME) curriculum area, particularly various aspects of Christianity.

Click on the links below to download each part of this pack. The pack was devised by Isobel Gallacher and Margaret Sharkey, members of the Leighton Library Education Subgroup. This is suitable for upper primary school stages.

This pack contains information about Robert Leighton with accompanying activities to learn more about him and his life. Likewise, it provides a background to the times in which he lived (17th century) with suggestions for activities linked to some of the interesting events which took place during that period.

Robert Leighton was very keen on improving relationships between different churches which were not on good terms at that time. Since Dunblane has eight churches, mainly Christian, there exists the perfect opportunity to look at the similarities and differences between denominations. The pack contains tasks to help children investigate the beliefs and practices of the denominations, as well as identifying and placing the churches within Dunblane. Teachers’ resources give a fuller explanation of this along with useful websites and a glossary of terms.

The beautiful stained glass windows in some of the churches are used as a basis for an art activity around the different styles of cross associated with branches of Christianity.

This pack is aimed primarily at upper primary but could be modified for use in other stages. It is designed in such a way that it can be used for a couple of lessons to familiarise the children with the Leighton Library and Robert
Leighton himself. Alternatively it could take the form of a more in-depth topic on Robert Leighton, the times in which he lived and/or the local places of worship.

The pack consists of 3 areas of focus:
1. Robert Leighton and his legacy
Text with suggested activities and a further set of activities which could be carried out following a visit to the two libraries (Dunblane Public Library and the Leighton Library).
2. Background to the times of Robert Leighton
Text with suggested activities
3. Dunblane churches and the seven denominations represented
This links to Robert Leighton’s desire for different branches of the church to work together
List of related activities
Also, Resource Section with background information for teachers on the different denominations, a glossary of terms, worksheets and other materials
