The Leighton Library has a 1641 edition of 96 sermons of English bishop and scholar Lancelot Andrewes who died #OnThisDay 25 September 1626. He had held high positions in the Church of England during the reigns of Elizabeth I and James I, including serving as Bishop of Chichester, of Ely, and of Winchester and oversaw the translation of the King James Version of the Bible (or Authorized Version). Sermons of his were used to promulgate the doctrine of the Divine Right of Kings. The 96 sermons were published by command of King Charles I, and are considered among the most rhetorically developed and polished sermons of the late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth centuries. He enjoyed a great reputation as an eloquent and impassioned preacher, with passages of extraordinary beauty and profundity. He has been commemorated by literary greats including T S Eliot (Eliot borrowed, almost word for word a passage from Andrewes' 1622 Christmas Day sermon for the opening of his poem "Journey of the Magi")https://youtu.be/Sy29vLx0Tz8
