The Leighton Library has a 1622 edition of “Angeli Politiani et aliorum virorum illustrium, Epistolarum libri XII. Eiusdem Praefatio in Suetonii Tranquilli expositionem” by Italian classical scholar and poet of the Florentine Renaissance Angelo Ambrogini who was born #OnThisDay 14 July 1454.
He was commonly known by his nickname Poliziano (or in English as Politian or in Latin Politianus). In 2007 the body of Poliziano was exhumed from the Church of San Marco in Florence to establish the cause of his death. Forensic tests showed that he likely died of arsenic poisoning, possibly on the order of Piero de' Medici
This collection of twelve books of letters by Poliziano, and other notable Renaissance humanists, offer insights into humanist scholarship, classical studies, and the political and cultural dynamics of late 15th-century Italy. The volume includes Poliziano’s Praefatio in Suetonii Tranquilli expositionem, a scholarly introduction to his commentary on the Roman historian Suetonius. The edition also features Latin translations of Greek texts, showcasing the humanist commitment to recovering and disseminating ancient knowledge
