The Leighton Library has a 1674 edition of "Seven sermons preached by Seth Lord Bishop of Sarum" by English mathematician, astronomer & Bishop of Salisbury, Seth Ward who died #OnThisDay 6 January 1689

Seth Ward was one of the most influential churchmen and intellectuals of Restoration England. He was known for being very tough on religious dissenters after the monarchy was restored in 1660. Ward’s sermons represent the restored Church of England re‑asserting its authority, beliefs, and boundaries.

His sermons deal with topics like:
• the dangers of religious doubt
• the importance of sticking to Scripture
• warnings against “anti‑Scripturists” (people rejecting the Bible).

Restoration sermons were:
• long
• moralistic
• rhetorical
• meant to defend the Church against critics
