The Leighton Library has a 1653 first edition of "Conjectura cabbalistica - a Conjectural Essay of Interpreting the Minde of Moses, according to a Threefold Cabbala: viz. Literal, Philosophical, Mystical, or Divinely Moral" by English philosopher and prolific writer of verse and prose Henry More who died #OnThisDay 1 September 1687
The book is an exploration of the deeper meaning behind the story of creation in Genesis.
More asked: • What if we looked at it literally (as it’s written)? • What if we explored it philosophically (using reason and big ideas)? • And what if we tried to understand it mystically (as a spiritual or moral message)?
He called these three approaches “Cabbalas” - a term borrowed from Jewish mysticism.
More was part of a group called the Cambridge Platonists, who believed that faith and reason could work together.
The book is More’s blend of science, spirituality, and scripture - decoding the Bible using a mix of logic, imagination, and spiritual insight.
