The Leighton Library has a 1813 edition of "An authentic narrative of some remarkable and interesting particulars in the life of John Newton" - the autobiography of John Newton, born #OnThisDay 24 July 1725.

This was originally published anonymously under the signatures of Omicron and Vigil in 1764 with a Preface by Haweis. This autobiographical work, originally composed as a series of letters to Rev. Thomas Haweis, recounts the dramatic spiritual journey of John Newton from a reckless sailor and slave trader to a devout Anglican clergyman and influential evangelical figure.

He wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace" having first been a captain of slave ships who then later became a prominent abolitionist.
