#OnThisDay 24 August 1662 the 1662 Book of Common Prayer was legally enforced as the liturgy of the Church of England, precipitating the Great Ejection of Dissenter ministers from their benefices. The Leighton Library has a 1662 edition of this book.

After the Restoration of King Charles II in 1660, the 1662 Book of Common Prayer was authorised in England to restore religious uniformity. In Scotland, however, its use remained controversial.

While the Scottish Episcopal Church embraced it, the dominant Church of Scotland (Presbyterian) rejected it. It became a symbol of royalist and episcopal allegiance.
