#OnThisDay 2 August 1776 the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence took place. Dunblane's historic Leighton Library has a contemporary 1776 edition of "The American atlas : or, A geographical description of the whole continent of America composed from numerous surveys by Major Holland et al Engraved on forty-nine copper-plates, by Thomas Jefferys." Samuel Holland was First Surveyor General of British North America, and Thomas Jeffreys was Geographer to King George III. The atlas features maps of the Americas from the Arctic to Cape Horn.
