The Leighton Library has a 1569 edition of "P. Rami Scholarum mathematicarum, libri unus et triginta" by influential French humanist, logician & educational reformer Petrus Ramus who was killed during the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre #OnThisDay 26 August 1572

This book was a landmark in the intellectual history of Renaissance Europe in the evolution of mathematics, and pedagogy.

This work comprises thirty-one books covering a wide array of mathematical disciplines - arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, optics, and music theory. Ramus aimed for systematic and simplified mathematical instruction.

Ramus advocated for a more practical, clear, and methodical approach to learning. This edition reflects his broader educational philosophy that knowledge should be organised logically and taught in a way that encourages understanding, not rote learning by committing to memory.

The 1569 edition is one of the earliest comprehensive printed textbooks of mathematics in Latin. It helped standardise mathematical terminology and pedagogy across Europe, influencing generations of educators and thinkers
