The Leighton Library has a 1630 edition of "De republica Anglorum" by English scholar, parliamentarian and diplomat Sir Thomas Smith who died #OnThisDay 12 August 1577.

He was Secretary of State in England under Queen Elizabeth I. He wrote this treatise while serving as ambassador to France.

This was written between 1562 and 1565, where he described England as a mixed government (blending monarchy, aristocracy, and democracy), and a commonwealth, and stated that all commonwealths are of mixed character
