The Leighton Library has a 1634 edition of "Adagia, id est : Prouerbiorum" on the subject of proverbs, edited by Swiss clergyman and theologian Johann Jakob Grynaeus who died #OnThisDay 13 August 1617.

His many works include commentaries on various books of the Old and New Testament.

This book is a comprehensive collection of proverbs, sayings, and parables drawn from a wide array of linguistic and cultural traditions - including Greek, Latin, Hebrew, and Arabic sources.

It includes material from Erasmus’s Adagiorum Chiliades, a foundational Renaissance text that used proverbs to explore moral and philosophical ideas. Grynaeus expanded and organised these into thematic categories, making the work more accessible for theological and rhetorical use.
