#OnThisDay 17 May 1551 Belgian theologian and occultist Martín Antonio del Río was born. His book on magic and the occult "Disquisitionum magicarum" made a connection between witches and heretics, and was one of the books used at the famous Salem witch trials of 1692. It has been asserted that he was the principal cause of witch-hunts in the Southern Netherlands. Dunblane's historic Leighton Library has a 1577 edition of his "Dionysii Alex. et Pomp. Melae Situs orbis descriptio. Aethici Cosmographia" bound in vellum, as well as a 1611 edition of his "In Canticum canticorum Salomonis commentarius litteralis, et catena mystica"
