The Leighton Library has a 1602 first edition of Agostino Valier’s “Vita B. Caroli Borromei card. S. Praxedis, et archiepiscopi Mediolani. Item opuscula duo, Episcopus, & Cardinalis” about Italian cardinal and saint Charles Borromeo, born #OnThisDay 2 October 1538. Charles Borromeo was a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation combat against the Protestant Reformation. His correspondence shows his influential position in Europe during his lifetime. The popes under whom he served sought his advice. The Catholic sovereigns of Europe, including Henry III of France, Philip II of Spain, and Mary, Queen of Scots showed how they valued his influence. A large number of churches around the world are dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, including in Scotland, the St Charles Borromeo Roman Catholic Oratory, North Kelvinside, Glasgow
