Leighton Library has a 1768 edition of "Oeuvres de Maupertuis" by French mathematician and philosopher Pierre Louis Maupertuis who died #OnThisDay 27 July 1759. He made an expedition to Lapland to determine the shape of the Earth. He is often credited with having invented the principle of least action, which remains central in modern physics and mathematics
