Dunblane's historic Leighton Library has a 1659 2nd edition of "Eruditionis scholasticae atrium, rerum & linguarum ornamenta exhibens; una cum ejusdem Fortio redivivo, sive De pellenda scholis ignavia" by Czech philosopher, pedagogue and theologian who is considered the father of modern education, John Amos Comenius, born #OnThisDay 28 March 1592. He led schools and advised governments across Protestant Europe through the middle of the seventeenth century. He introduced a number of educational concepts and innovations including pictorial textbooks written in native languages instead of Latin, teaching based in gradual development from simple to more comprehensive concepts, lifelong learning with a focus on logical thinking over memorisation, equal opportunity for impoverished children, education for women, and universal and practical instruction. The Comenius Medal, a UNESCO award honouring outstanding achievements in the fields of education research and innovation, commemorates Comenius. He was hailed as the inventor of textbooks and primers. Comenius is the name given in his memory to a European Union school partnership program. Many schools and education programmes are named in his honour
