Leighton Library has a 1680 edition of the controversial "Histoire critique du Vieux Testament" by French priest, influential biblical critic and orientalist Richard Simon who was born #OnThisDay 13 May 1638. In this book Richard Simon denied that Moses was the author of the Pentateuch and showed that there were often duplicate accounts of the same incident told with variations of style. These ideas caused his expulsion from the Oratory, and almost all of the original print run to be destroyed!
