Leighton Library has a 1785 edition of "The spectator. In eight volumes" by English essayist, poet, playwright and politician Joseph Addison born #OnThisDay 1 May 1672 and Sir Richard Steele. Together they founded the daily publication The Spectator magazine in 1711. Addison also wrote the popular church hymn "The Spacious Firmament on High", publishing it in The Spectator in 1712.
The current weekly newspaper "The Spectator" consciously revived its name from the celebrated 18th century publication
