The Leighton Library has a 1639 edition of the utopian novel "New Atlantis" by Sir Francis Bacon (1st Viscount St. Albans) who was born #OnThisDay 22 January 1561. He was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, essayist & author. "New Atlantis" depicts the creation of a utopian land where "generosity and enlightenment, dignity and splendour, piety and public spirit" are the commonly held qualities of the inhabitants of the mythical Bensalem

Voltaire introduced him to a French audience as the "father" of the scientific method. The phrase "knowledge is power" is commonly attributed to Bacon
