#OnThisDay, 23 March 1688 the death occurred of Lieutenant-General William Drummond, 1st Viscount Strathallan, Baron Drummond of Cromlix, and Commander of the Forces in Scotland. He was a friend of Robert Leighton, and was the architect of the Leighton Library. During its construction he came as often as he could to his town house directly opposite the site. The loss of such a committed, generous and influential patron was a great blow at the time to the newly-completed library, opened just the year earlier in 1687
