The Leighton Library has a 1769 3-volume edition of "Letters of the Right Honourable Lady Mary Wortley Montagu : written, during her travels in Europe, Asia and Africa, to persons of distinction, men of letters, &c. in different parts of Europe" by Mary Wortley Montagu who died #OnThisDay 21 August 1762. She was an English aristocrat, writer, and poet. She wrote extensively about her experience as a woman in Ottoman Constantinople (where her husband had been appointed Ambassador to negotiate an end to the Austro-Turkish War). She is known for introducing and advocating for smallpox inoculation to Britain after her return from Turkey. Her writings addressed and challenged the then hindering social attitudes towards women
