The Leighton Library has a 5th edition of 1833 of "A practical view of the prevailing religious system of professed Christians, in the higher and middle classes in this country, contrasted with real Christianity" by British politician, philanthropist, and a leader of the movement to abolish the slave trade, William Wilberforce (who died #OnThisDay 29 July 1833) and Daniel Wilson. This was an exposition of New Testament doctrine and teachings and a call for a revival of Christianity, as a response to what was seen as the moral decline of the nation, illustrating his own testimony and the views which inspired him. The book was influential and a best-seller, with 7,500 copies sold within six months, and it was translated into several languages. With others, Wilberforce founded the world's first animal welfare organisation, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (which later became the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)
